Racial Equality for Arbitration Lawyers

REAL is a group of global lawyers practicing in international arbitration and striving to achieve racial equality for arbitration lawyers. Our two foundational goals are access and advocacy. Access to this “arbitration club,” where we each represent different racial platforms across different jurisdictions, to open the door to more practitioners. One avenue is to address the socio-economic limitation for many entering our field with a focus on community building for young and mid-level practitioners. To this end and unless deemed necessary, we will not charge a membership fee to join REAL. We also offer many scholarships to participate in arbitration events all around the world. Advocacy to build awareness and spotlight the absence of racial diversity in our field. A second avenue is to address the lack of racial parity in arbitral appointments with a focus on community building with stakeholders — arbitral institutions, law firms, clients, third party funders, expert shops, and onwards. Where we conceive of a relevant nexus, we build cooperation, and create change therewith.

Middle East Association

The Middle East Association (MEA) is a longstanding UK-based organisation committed to strengthening relations across all sectors between the UK and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Founded in 1961 by the British Government, the MEA has evolved from focusing primarily on trade, investment, and diplomatic relations to engaging in all aspects of the UK’s relationship with countries in the region.

The MEA benefits from an influential network that spans government, politics, business, academia, think tanks, and the media. It provides businesses, embassies, and individuals with a valuable platform for engagement through high-level events, private roundtables, and strategic networking opportunities.

The MEA hosts four flagship events each year: a Parliamentary Reception (January), an Ambassadors’ Reception (June/July), a Gala Dinner (September/October), and an Annual Lecture (November).

The organisation is led by Director General Nicholas Hopton, former UK Ambassador to Qatar, Libya, Iran, and Yemen. He is supported by a small executive team and an Advisory Board made up of distinguished individuals with longstanding engagement in the region. The Honorary President is Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former Chairman of Shell and Anglo American.

As the MEA builds momentum following its relaunch in July 2024, it is seeking to attract more active members—organisations and individuals who have a strong interest in the region and who value access to senior decision-makers, timely geopolitical and market insights, and meaningful connections.

Membership provides not only visibility but also a voice in shaping the MEA’s programme as it expands its reach and impact. Feedback consistently highlights that MEA events are intellectually stimulating, valuable for business, and enjoyable to attend.

The MEA also collaborates with like-minded organisations and embassies. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses and other partners, while patronage is an option for suitable high-net-worth individuals. In addition, the MEA is developing its offer for future generations, particularly through a pro bono Young Professionals Group and a Student Network.
